Enjoy the Parenting Experience Through Mindfulness

Mindfulness, put simply, is the process of being aware of your mind and body: paying attention to your thoughts and movements. The practice of mindfulness can help parents cope with stressful situations and manage their own emotions while ultimately setting a good example for their kids.

Consider this situation: You’ve had a tough day and know that you’re close to the edge. Your child is constantly misbehaving and when enough becomes enough, the flood gates open. You yell. You threaten. You punish. And maybe you end up saying something so over the top you know it isn’t true and will need to apologize for it later.

This situation is a perfect example of reacting instead of responding which lets face it, is not the most effective means of handling the scenarios and can happen more often than we want it to. Studies have shown that by practicing mindfulness we can begin to see situations from other perspectives, respond in intentional ways, and above all else, learn to stay calm in stressful situations

Almost Everything Will Work Again If You Unplug it for a Few Minutes, Including You

Mindfulness, put simply, is the process of being aware of your mind and body: paying attention to your thoughts and movements. The practice of mindfulness can help teachers cope with stressful situations and manage their own emotions while ultimately setting a good example inside of the classroom.

Connecting and being present with your students starts with you being connected and present with yourself. It’s important to cultivate your own practices and do your own work so that you can embody and model what you teach in the classroom.

Studies have shown that there are many upsides to practicing mindfulness. Some of the benefits include:

  • Increased self-awareness and self-regulation
  • Decrease stress and anxiety
  • Improved ability to focus and concentrate
  • Engaging in more mindful and empowered communication
  • Increased ability to manage stress more effectively and process emotions in a healthier way
  • Improvement in cognitive performance including memory and problem solving

What Does A Lion and An Exam Have In Common?

Exam season can be one of the most stressful times for students where the increase in stress can lead to mood swings, anxiety, and a decrease in well-being among studiers. The good news is that it does not need to be this way. A study published in the Psychological Science Journal confirmed that mindfulness helps improve your working memory capacity and significantly reduce the tendency of your mind to wander. Not only this, but by calming our minds and bodies, students can begin to feel an increase in their self-esteem as well as their overall happiness.

So how do we practice mindfulness…

When you’re ready, grab a seat, turn your phone on silent, and click the play button below for a guided meditation to decrease any feelings of stress and anxiety before you get back to studying.

Jennifer Busato, ACL of Wellness and School Based Initiatives

Sir Oliver Mowat

Our students were engaged and excited when working with Anastasia and developing their leadership through the student leadership training sessions. She built a strong rapport with our group, and after our first session, the students had come out of their comfort zones and were exploring a deeper understanding of themselves, while building stronger relationships with their peers. The student leaders were motivated and excited to implement various wellness initiatives at our school. Anastasia was very supportive and flexible throughout the process. I received an immense amount of positive feedback after our school wide compliment grams and assemblies. Staff and students alike were moved by the grams and really resonated with the messages in the assemblies we held during our Wellness Week. I highly recommend the Youth Wellness Network to any school looking to further support wellness and school engagement and look forward to partnering with them again in the future.
